What is Transition About?

Transition is about rebuilding skills and local resilience and helping communities come together in adapting to and mitigating  the  impacts of peak oil, climate change and economic uncertainty.

Transition Communities do this by:

  • Supporting, training in and restoring local organic food growing
  • Working with nature and supporting biodiversity that helps with processes like composting, pollination and natural pest controls – all required to enable food production
  • Supporting local businesses and relocalising essential services to reduce mundane travel
  • Campaigning and working with other groups for safer sustainable travel options in the area
  • Learning about energy efficiency and local microgeneration with attractive feed back tariffs
  • Installing devices for rainwater and grey water collection and use
  • Developing and training in sustainable manufacture and construction, for producing goods and structures locally that are based on natural materials rather than oil-based ones

As written in the constitution of Eastleigh Transition Network, the aim is to  inspire and encourage individuals, groups and businesses in and around Eastleigh Borough to:

– tackle climate change

– reduce their oil dependency

– live more sustainably

These are separated into opportunities, actions and objectives that the ‘hub’ and sub groups of the network are beginning to work on.

The overall vision, shared with partners in the Borough and members of our local communities working together, is to be able to achieve the following:

To enable the communities of Eastleigh Borough, Chandlers Ford and surrounding areas to make the transition from a high cost, high carbon, oil dependent economy to a lower cost, lower carbon, and more resilient economy.

We meet in Eastleigh, on the last Wednesday of each month, except December.

You are very welcome to contact us with your ideas, or to join us at one of  the meetings and/or get involved in activities or projects that interest you.  For more information contact us by email or phone.

Eastleigh Transition Network

Local sustainability, Global responsibility  …be part of a sustainable future!

Background

At the 26 August meeting Eastleigh Sustainability Group decided to become a Transition Initiative, known as ‘Eastleigh Transition Network’.  The constitution for Eastleigh Transition Network was adopted on Wednesday 30 September.  We formed a ‘hub group’ or steering group to help guide the initiative.

We feel  a network structure will be most appropriate for Eastleigh Borough due to the dispersed nature of the separate communities outside Eastleigh Town. While we expect people in some of the villages and towns will be interested in setting up their own groups, we are very happy for them to link with and/or work in partnership with our group.  They will then be able to make use of any of the resources and experience at our disposal.

Transition is the fastest growing movement in the UK, with over 130 Transition Towns, Villages, Cities, and Islands with over 600 communities preparing to become Transition Communities.  Southampton, New Forest, Romsey and Andover are already Transition Communities.

We normally meet in Eastleigh on the last Wednesday of each month except December.  We welcome involvement from people from all groups, businesses, organisations and partnerships in/around Eastleigh Borough, at meetings, events and activities in/around the Borough.  All meetings are notified in advance.  Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions/suggestions/comments.

Next Meetings of Eastleigh Transition Network will be Wednesday 28th April 2010, and Wednesday 26 May 2010 at The Pavilion on the Park, 1 Kingfisher Road, Eastleigh SO50 9LH, starting at 7 pm.  Details will be sent out and posted on the website nearer the time.

Please do not hesitate to contact me on any matter.  I will be interested to hear your views.
